What is YET?
In June 2000, Public/Private Ventures (P/PV) established the Youth Education for Tomorrow (YET) initiative, a Philadelphia-based after-school and summer literacy program. To date, YET Centers have improved participants' reading scores an average of 1.3 grade levels for those who attended at least 180 days. Since the program's inception, YET has expanded to reach more than 7,300 children in over 420 after school classrooms throughout the nation. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, The Pew Charitable Trusts and the City of Philadelphia, YET Centers are overseen by P/PV's Department of Education Initiatives.
P/PV designed the YET program model in cooperation with leading literacy experts specifically for use in after-school settings. The services provided by YET Centers are consistent with No Child Left Behind’s essential components for literacy instruction, and all strategies and materials have been shown by research to be effective in increasing reading performance. YET’s literacy instruction is provided for an hour and a half each day, four or five days per week. Centers follow a daily schedule of activities, varying with age, grade and reading level, assuring a balanced literacy program comprised of independent student reading and teacher reading, oral language, vocabulary and comprehension activities, writing and reading games.
